Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (Prof. S. Wrobel)
The chair of Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems in Bonn is jointly carried by the University of Bonn and the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (Fraunhofer IAIS) where by joint appointment, Prof. Wrobel is Executive Director.
Our research focuses on the challenges brought about by the enormously growing volumes of data that are available in digital form today. The convergence of media to digital formats, the ubiquitous presence of intelligent devices with sensors and communication abilities, the exploding amounts of content created by users in the Web, and the beginning use of autonomous devices all call for intelligent means of analyzing data and using them to control processes, make decisions and inform humans. With such algorithms and systems, companies and organizations can improve products and services, gain efficiency, and be more competitive.
In approaching the topic, we believe that both the algorithmic side of data analysis, pattern recognition, data mining and machine learning as well as the interaction side of communicating with people, involving visual analytics, business intelligence, and the design of information spaces and systems, need to be considered as two sides of a single coin. While our work is firmly rooted in the algorithmic and formal principles of computer science, our special approach is that we always want to see results go to practice. To this end, we interface with engineers at Fraunhofer IAIS who realize large-scale customer applications.
At present, the chair is organized along the following topics and groups:
In addition, the chair is closely linked to the B-IT/IAIS group on
In the following areas, IAIS is also cooperating with Univ. of Bonn:
- Adaptive Robotics (Uwe Beyer), in cooperation with the Autonomous Intelligent Systems group of Prof. Dr. Sven Behnke
